Silt Fence

Silt fences are a sediment control device used as part of larger erosion control plans. These are used on construction sites and help protect aquatic resources from contamination.

Silt Fence

Silt Fences are temporary sediment control devices that are designed to prevent the release of silt from a construction site. Silt fence is supplied as 100’ rolls of permeable fabric with wooden stakes securely fastened in pockets of the fabric. These are installed along landscape contours to collect or filter sediment from sheet flow runoff.

Silt Fences prevent silt contamination of sensitive areas such as neighboring properties, streams, and catch basins. A properly installed and maintained silt fence will collect silts before they can cause contamination requiring expensive clean up. Silt fences are most often used on sites where the soil has been stripped of natural vegetation. The bare soil is easily eroded and can lead to the loss of large quantities of silt during a rainstorm or other run-off event. Silt Fences are short term solutions to your BMP needs.

If you don’t have time or manpower to install all of the necessary BMP’s for your project, contact Specialty and we would be happy to provide you with a subcontractor quote.

Wire Backed Silt Fence

This variation on the traditional Silt Fence style provides rugged, reliable, and low maintenance silt control. Wire Backed Silt Fence will effectively protect storm water drainage systems from fouling with silt, and will protect you from environmental liability due to silt leaving your project site.

Our Wire Backed Silt Fence is constructed with a three-foot high wire backing, covered with a woven polypropylene filter fabric. The galvanized steel supports the fabric in an upright position, even under substantial loads of silt and water. A fabric apron extending beyond the wire allows the material to be securely trenched into place.

The apron extends across the anchoring trench beneath the Silt Fence, and helps to anchor the fence and prevent undercutting. Specialty can provide metal T Posts and ties to secure the Wire Backed Silt Fence in position.

TURBIDITY BARRIERS OR FSC UNITS (FLOATING SILT CURTAINS)

Turbidity curtains and floating silt curtains are used to control the release of silt from a construction site. The curtains float in the water and form a barrier to the silt. Different styles of turbidity curtains are available for specific applications and flow rates.

Fixed and floating baffle curtains are used to direct the flow of water to increase the residence time in a pond or reservoir. Fixed baffles are typically bolted to the inside of concrete water reservoirs while floating baffles are typically placed in wastewater treatment ponds. Specialty can assist you with selecting which curtain is right for your job specific application.
